The Boston Women's Heritage Trail: The Future is Hers (event video)

This presentation by Ferna Phillips, a Board Member of the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail was provided to celebrate Women’s History Month 2025. In 1989, a group of Boston Public School teachers and students decide to highlight the overlooked contributions of women to Boston’s history. Modeled after the Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail, the BWHT celebrates the past accomplishments of remarkable women in Boston, claiming their rightful place in our City’s history through education, reflection, and an interactive city-wide monument.

For the last 30 years, the BWHT has functioned as a volunteer-only program. They have developed self-guided walking tours in 14 Boston neighborhoods and identified 300+ landmarks across the city highlighting the unique contributions of women in Boston. They helped get the Boston Women’s Memorial erected on Commonwealth Avenue among other accomplishments.

In 2024, BWHT obtained its own 501c(3) status and this fall deployed some new trail markers in Jamaica Plain. They have just hired a new Executive Director - their first paid staff person Learn about exciting future plans the BWHT have for activating the powerful female side of Boston’s history.

This event was held on March 15, 20245 at 11:00 a.m both at the Jamaica Plain Branch Library and via Zoom. Click on the triangle below to watch the presentation.
