The Legacy of Pauline Agassiz Shaw (Event Video)

A talk held at the Paul Revere House as part of their Lowell Lecture Series in 2021 featuring Robert Shrimp, PhD of the Paul Revere House moderating. The speakers are Mary Howland Smoyer of the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail and Gretchen Grozier of the Jamaica Plain Historical Society. Learn how Boston social reformer Pauline Agassiz Shaw (1841-1917) used her wealth to pay for a vast number of philanthropic efforts including: financing the first public kindergartens in America, lobbying for both prison reform and world peace, participating in the women’s suffrage movement and founding day nurseries and neighborhood houses (including the North Bennet Street School).
